Anna Mark is a member of the generation of Hungarian painters who began their careers after the Second World War and who fulfilled their potential in France. During its second collaboration with DIT. Vienna, Kisterem presents a selection of works by Mark created between the mid-70s and the mid-90s, a period in which her experimentations led her to the relief form and her own instinctive path. These reliefs balance between sculpture and painting, wrestling with material and dimensions. They reflect strength and fragility; their richly detailed surfaces convey endless sensual impulses, and occasionally creative humour. Mark's abstract motifs are rooted in the diverse folk art, music and architecture of Eastern Europe. Similarly to Béla Bartók, the famous composer who collected folk tunes, Anna Mark also takes folk art as the original source. Her aim is also similar: not to imitate or rewrite folk art, but to gain a profound understanding of it as a starting point for creating something new and different: modern art.
